TEMPLE EMBO

"Masibuyele eMbo" – Let us return to our roots. Embo, in Xhosa, signifies ancestry, origin, and the deep spiritual call to remember where we come from. It is a name that resonates with timelessness and reverence - evoking the sacred, the ancient, and the essential. This temple is a tribute to those ideas - a space that honours ancestral memory while creating a powerful experience of sound, presence, and community.

At the heart of Temple Embo is the Indlunkulu, the central hut. Traditionally, this is the gathering space for the family - a place of rituals, daily life, and communion with the ancestors. It holds profound social and spiritual significance. In this reimagined sacred space, the Indlunkulu anchors the entire structure, surrounded by interconnected rondavels (circular huts), forming a living, breathing village of sound.

Each room in the temple is not only an architectural expression but also an instrument. The walls themselves will sing - crafted with embedded, playable instruments that visitors can touch, pluck, and resonate with. These instruments will be life-sized, sculptural, and interactive - built with the support and collaboration of our artistic community.

Built-in instruments will include:

  • Kalimba
  • Harps
  • Drone Strings
  • Marimba
  • Nyatiti (East African lyre)
  • Monochord
  • Sound Bed (for immersive, vibrational healing)
  • Resonant Strings woven into the walls and structure

SIZE:

    Centre Hut A = 8m Diameter x 8m Height
    Hut B = 8m Diameter x 9m Height
    Hut C = 8m Diameter x 9m Height
    Hut D = 8m Diameter x 9m Height

This space is designed to be experiential, ancestral, and collective - a place where sound becomes spirit, and community becomes ceremony. A sonic temple rooted in tradition, vibrating into the future.
